In the first time of the history of the Church of South India (CSI), Synod Executive Committee Meeting was held on 18th April 2018 at Jaffna in Sri Lanka, which is the headquarters of the Jaffna Diocese, which is one among the twenty- four dioceses of the Church of South India. Most Rev. Thomas K. Oommen, the Moderator of the Church of South India, on his first visit to the country as Moderator, led the Holy Communion Service and gave the sermon at CSI Cathedral. 22 Bishops and almost all the members of the Executive Committee of the Synod attended the Holy Communion Service, which marked the commencing of the meeting. In his sermon, the Moderator brought the attention of the committee members to three biblical characters; Paul, Esther, and Pontius Pilote, and exhorted them to follow the leadership qualities of Paul and Esther, especially their willingness to face the challenges, and pointed out the danger of ‘washing the hands off’ by the leaders like Pilote, which will cause damage to the growth of the church.
After the Holy Communion, the Executive Committee Meeting began at the at ShilohJDCSI Auditorium. The leaders of the Church were welcomed with garlands made out of Sri Lankan spices. Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel Thiagarajah, the host Bishop, and briefed about the history of the Diocese, especially against the backdrop of the socio- political situation in Jaffna. Rev. Dr. Daniel Rathnakara Sadananda, the General Secretary of the Church of South India, welcomed the gathering and led the meeting along with the Moderator, Rt. Rev. Vadapalli Prasada Rao; the Deputy Moderator, and Adv. Robert Bruce; the Hon. Treasurer. The Committee resolved to give all the support to the Jaffna Diocese of the CSI in their efforts and struggles to make peace in the area. The Executive Committee meeting will continue on the 19th of April.
