His Grace the Most Rev. Dr Joseph Mar Thoma,
Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church
“Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.” (Revelation 1413)
I am deeply saddened to hear that His Eminence the Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Suffragan Metropolitan has been called to eternity. With his death, the Church of South India mourns the loss not only of an exemplary disciple and minister of Lord Jesus but also a very good friend of the Church of South India. His longstanding association with the Church of South India, especially the Diocese of Madhya Kerala, is a wonderful example of his ecumenical commitment.
The Nedumbram CMS L P School, in Madhya Kerala Diocese, where His Eminence did his primary education, always had a special place in his heart. When the School celebrated its 150th year, as an expression of his love and care for the School, he donated a substantial amount towards the construction of the compound wall for the Church and School. This is just one example of how much he loved the Church of South India, the Diocese of Madhya Kerala and the CMS LP School, Nedumbram. Indeed, this is also a visible expression of his humanitarian love and concern for the poor and marginalized.
At this time of separation and sorrow, on behalf of the Church of South India, I wish to offer, along with my fellow officers of the CSI Synod - Rt. Rev. Vadapalli Prasada Rao; the Deputy Moderator, Rev. Dr. Daniel Rathnakara Sadananda, the General Secretary, and Adv. Robert Bruce; the Hon. Treasurer- my sincere condolences to you, the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, his bereaved family and all those who mourn the loss of Thirumeni. I pray that the God of all consolation console all of us so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. May the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted,” comfort us.
As we thank God for the life and witness of His Eminence Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Suffragan Metropolitan, may his life and witness become a model for all of us to be emulated. May his soul rest in peace. May what is sown perishable rise imperishable. May he continue to live in our hearts.
Yours in Christ,
Most Revd Thomas K. Oommen
Moderator, Church of South India & Bishop in Madhya Kerala Diocese.
