Rt. Rev. Dr David Gnaniah Pothirajulu, the Former Deputy Moderator of CSI, Passes Away

Rt. Rev. Dr David Gnaniah Pothirajulu, the Former Deputy Moderator of the Church of South India (CSI) who served the Madurai- Ramnadu Diocese from 1978 to 1994 passed away yesterday (05.09.2020) at Madurai.

Bishop Pothirajulu (19.09.1936 - 05.09.2020) was the third Bishop of Diocese of Madurai-Ramnad. He was elected as the Deputy Moderator of CSI in 1988. Being a theologian, he served as a lecturer in the Tamilnadu Theological Seminary until he became the Bishop of the Diocese.

His doctoral studies in Boston University helped him to put together his earlier experiences of building up leadership development programme in Academies in Germany (Bad Boll), Schools of Education (PSCE), Ecumenical Institute in (Bossey) and Schools of Education (BU). He took up world tours twice for a study of the Lay Training Model being evolved by Churches and Lay Institutes. He later founded the Lay Training Institute at Madurai.

Bishop is survived by his wife Mrs K. Pothirajulu, sons Mr James, Mr Joseph and daughter Mrs Jeba Samuel.

Most Rev. Dharmaraj Rasalam; the Moderator of CSI, Rt. Rev. Dr Reuben Mark; the Deputy Moderator, Adv. Fernandas Rathina Raja; the General Secretary, and Prof. Dr Vimal Sukumar; the Treasurer, expressed their deep condolences to the bereaved family.
